Teacher Training

Within the structure of the school one member of the Senior Leadership Team oversees and coordinates Initial Teacher Training.  We also enjoy the provision of excellent administrative support.

At present we are in partnership with Essex Thames SCITT  and The Billericay Educational Consortium.  We are also linked to King’s College London PGCE Programme.

There are a number of paths for teacher training

  1. PGCE  - this a university based programme of study leading to QTS as well as a PGCE qualification. Applications should be made through the UCAS website
  2. School Direct - There are two paths through School Direct.
  3. School Direct salaried - Is for trainees with at least three years in employment before starting the training course. Applicants need to have at least a 2.1 degree classification and three years’ work experience. Trainees train on a school based programme and are funded through the TA at a rate of £20,000 for high priority subjects, £15,400 for other priority subjects and unfunded for other subjects.
  4. School Direct unsalaried - students can apply for this course at any time after university. There is no salary attached and this is regarded as a continuation of HE study. The programme followed is the same as the salaried School Direct and can include credits towards a master’s degree.

In both School Direct programmes the student will be based in one school but undertake a placement in a second school and will also experience schools in different phases.

If  you are interested in the School Direct programme please send a CV to Shoeburyness High School for the attention of Amy Root or Jill Saunders at We also welcome visits from prospective candidates.

For further information about School Direct see
Teacher training fees are the responsibility of the trainee and once accepted on a course the trainees must make arrangements to pay the fee to the accredited provider. Some bursaries are available through the provider, CCCU, and for priority subjects. The Teaching Agency website has more information
