Year 10 Work Experience
INTRODUCTION TO WORK EXPERIENCE
We are aiming for all students in Year 10 to have a two week work experience starting on Monday 13th July 2020. This requires a lot of planning and preparation, which has to begin many months in advance.
Below is a brief outline of the process along with useful information including contacts and key dates.
At certain points throughout there will be a requirement for parental consent and signed agreements, however the main responsibility for organisation and action should lie with the students, including selecting a placement and making arrangements for travel or interviews etc. Please be aware that delays could result in students losing their placement.
Information and launch
Initial information evening (Wednesday, 9 October 2019 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm).This event will be held in the new canteen area and is open to parents/carers and Yr10 students to attend.
Year 10 student assembly (Thursday, 10th October 2019 Period 1). To include an overview for those students who were unable to attend the information evening.
Self-placement and assistance
The most successful placements occur where the student takes ownership of the process of trying to secure work experience (self-placement). In the tabs following this section you will find useful advice for students, parents and employers to help in your search.
This can appear to be a daunting task for some, and the school will endeavour to help as much as possible throughout the process with sessions in Period 1 devoted to work experience and by holding regular after school sessions where staff will be available to offer ideas and assistance in securing a placement.
October 2019 – students to complete a Work Experience information sheet.
October 2019 – June 2020 – Self placement forms to be returned to school. Work experience placement assessments to be carried out by school to confirm suitability. Issue and return of Agreements between students/parents and school.
Friday 22nd May 2020 – Medical and Consent Forms to be returned to school
Friday 5th June 2020 – last date for the return of self-placement forms in order to complete all necessary checks. Any placements received after this date will be signed off on a best efforts basis.

ADVICE TO STUDENTS
- Aim to enjoy work experience and impress your employer.
- Be adventurous. Don’t follow your friends or just try to stay near home.
- Be responsible and take all letters home and bring them back signed as quickly as possible.
- Be prepared for disappointment. Many people don’t get their first choices, but often they find something better instead.
- Work experience is WORK. Be prepared to work hard and do whatever you are asked.
- Sometimes you may simply be shadowing staff or observing other people work. Be patient and understand that you are still learning about work.
- Pay attention during any training given by your employer. Failing to follow Health and Safety advice is a sure way to mess up your work experience and put yourself at risk.
- If you are unsure about anything—ask, if you are worried about anything—check. Better to check than get something wrong.
- Please remember, if the school has a non-pupil day during the Work Experience period, this does not mean that you can have a day off work. You must follow the specified hours agreed.
- Do not ask to leave early for any reason, including paper rounds etc.
- After completing Work Experience and starting to look for full time work, many prospective employers are impressed if they see that you have participated in Work Experience.
ADVICE TO PARENTS
- Be positive, and encourage your child. This can be a very positive experience, and a lot depends on the student’s approach to the work placement.
- Allow your child to take ownership and make their own choices and make all necessary arrangements.
- Check any agreements that you are asked to sign. Small details can sometimes be very important. All medical conditions must be listed. Read the job description carefully to ensure students know what is expected of them.
- Encourage your child to dress smartly, this will help create a positive first impression.
- Please check that students return paperwork promptly. Sometimes this can be forgotten and left in bags or blazer pockets for weeks.
- Please be aware of the key dates (see front page), and contact the school (preferably by e-mail) if you have any concerns.
ADVICE TO EMPLOYERS
- Have high expectations and set challenging but realistic work for students.
- Please do not leave students unsupervised at any time.
- Remember students are under 16 and are therefore minors in the eyes of the law
- Feel free to contact Shoeburyness High School with any concerns. It is better to discuss issues if you are unsure.
- Be aware of safeguarding issues, e.g. avoid being alone in a room with a student. Just leaving a door open and blinds up can make a significant difference.
- Avoid using social media, e.g. Facebook, with students; also texting or personal e-mail accounts.
- Time spent giving clear instructions and ‘training’ students will make the students more useful and productive for your organisation.
- Students are rewarded by gaining experience. No payment is expected.

Self-placement is the best way to make sure students get the placement of their choice. You may have a friend or family member who is prepared to take your child for two weeks or your son or daughter might like to approach local companies, organisations or shops. Employers will first need to complete a self-placement form and, if the company is new to us, we will need to arrange a short visit just to ensure the environment is suitable. The employer must have full employer and public liability insurance. In general, sole traders or self-employed individuals are unlikely to be able to offer appropriate work experience.
We encourage self-placements as they can open opportunities that otherwise may not have been available.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What should I wear?
Dress smart casual or appropriately if there is a chance of getting dirty. If in any doubt always contact your employer to check. They won’t think you are being a nuisance; they are more likely to be impressed that you are conscientious.
What hours do I have to work?
Most placements will be approximately 9 to 5 with a lunch break. Employers may ask you to come at different times. Always try to do what they ask, but if you have difficulties, start by explaining and talking to the employer.
What should I do if I am sick?
Please phone the employer first, as early as possible, then contact the school as well.
Will I get paid?
Work experience is unpaid. You are gaining experience and the employer actually has to spend time showing you what to do. Sometimes if the placement has gone well you may receive a gift or reward but this should never be expected.
What if I only get to make tea?
This can be very frustrating and we do try to avoid these types of placements. However, do remember that this is a basic, but important, task which usually falls to the lower members of the workforce. Many very successful people started out right at the bottom as the tea boy or girl and it has been known for employers to favour the “one who made a good cup of tea”
I’m worried I might have to lift heavy things.
It is unusual for anybody to lift heavy things at work. People usually use trolleys and hoists. Always say if you think something may be heavy, better safe than sorry.
My friend is working less hours than me, that isn’t fair.
Life isn’t fair and certainly people work different hours. Judge your own experience from your point of view and try not to compare with other people. Most placements have advantages and disadvantages and they are certainly not all the same.
Can I get help to pay for travel?
Unfortunately neither the school nor the employer is able to help with travel expenses. Take this into consideration when making your choices. If fares might be a problem, start by looking for something close to home, or where you know you can get a lift.
I have to travel for 30 minutes, shouldn’t that be counted as work hours?
No, people who work are only paid from the time they start work. Time spent travelling is not considered as work. For many students this is one of the first things they learn from Work Experience.
Do I have to wear the clothes they tell me?
Generally employers are realistic, and don’t expect students to buy new clothes. If any safety clothing like overalls, goggles or hard hats are required these are usually provided and you certainly must wear these if instructed.
