At Shoeburyness High School our students are encouraged to achieve to the best of their ability. We emphasise the importance of attendance in allowing this potential to be realised. Currently, our attendance as a school is 95.2% which is fantastic; in order to make further improvements we need to ensure that every student attends at this rate or better.
Studies have shown that if children miss 17 school days a year it will equal one GCSE grade drop in attainment in the external examinations. An attendance figure of 90% means that a student will have missed 4 weeks of lessons in an academic year or half a year over a five year period. Therefore you can see why, at Shoeburyness High School, we will be expecting 95.5% and above.
We monitor attendance very carefully and have a team of people who regularly meet to look at the progress being made by students and if there are concerns they will contact you. If you choose to take your child on holiday during term time, they are often late or your child’s attendance falls below 90% you may be subject to a fixed penalty notice and/or court action. We work very carefully with the Local Authority who also monitor any significant periods of absence.
We are still running our school wide rewards system which allows students to receive prizes based on their attendance and Attitude To Learning (ATL). As part of this system, parents may also receive vouchers up to the value of £100 if students successfully attend over 98% of the time. Finally, there are prize draws where Apple iPad minis are available as our top prize for 100% attendance for the full year.
I appreciate your co-operation in getting your child to school on time and supporting us in our efforts to improve attendance here at Shoeburyness High School.
