Enhanced Healthy School Status

In December 2016 Shoeburyness High School was awarded Enhanced Healthy School Status, which has again been successfully revalidated until December 2022.

The Healthy School Programme was introduced nearly 20 years ago, with the main aims of the programme being to:

  • Support children and young people in developing healthy behaviours
  • Raise pupil achievement
  • Help reduce health inequalities
  • Promote social exclusion

Some of the work we do to achieve the above includes fortnightly 100 minute SCOPE or RESHAPE lessons for year 7-11 delivered by specialist staff, extra-curricular PE activities before and after school, a varied healthy menu in the new spacious canteen, weekly school nurse visits, pupils who are trained Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, a variety of clubs run in various faculties, student voice meetings, ACE assemblies, awards evenings and ‘Blue Weeks’.

To be awarded Enhanced Healthy School Status we took part in the Equality and Diversity Champion Programme. At Shoeburyness High School we are committed to protecting our young people from discrimination and we want to ensure that every pupil is treated fairly.  The programme gave us criteria to address relevant issues that were happening in our school. Activities that took place included pupils working with a songwriter to create verses for a song based around bullying, which was shared on social media. E-safety was addressed as a whole school approach in assemblies and computing lessons, with some teachers being CEOP trained. Show Racism the Red Card was a one day workshop which allowed pupils to discuss issues surrounding racism and hate crime and gave them the confidence to challenge possible stereotypes. By addressing this criteria as well as the Healthy School criteria we were awarded Enhanced Healthy School Status.

By taking part in The Southend Children and Young People’s Health and Wellbeing Survey 2019 we have an up to date report which will help us gauge some of the most important factors that affect the lives of our young people both now and in the future. This will help us to continue work together with staff and external agencies to support our pupils.
