At Shoeburyness High School our students are encouraged to achieve to the best of their ability. We emphasise the importance of attendance in allowing this potential to be realised. Our attendance as a school for 2016/17 was 95.9%, the highest performing non-selective school in the Borough as well as significantly above national average. All of which is a fantastic achievement. This is now our 5th consecutive year of improvement. In order to make further improvements we need to ensure that every student attends at this rate or better. We target intervention with students whose attendance falls below target of 96%.
Days off school add up to lost learning. We want all students to achieve high levels of attendance and give themselves the very best life chances and choices. 90% attendance may look impressive but it means they miss 19 days of education in a year and risk dropping one grade in their GCSEs. The table below shows the impact of missing school.
We are still running our school wide rewards system, which allows students to receive prizes, based on their attendance. As part of this system, students are entered into a draw each term to receive vouchers up to the value of £100 if they successfully attend over 98% of the time. We are grateful to EGL who sponsor the termly prizes. There are also draws each month for 100% attendance to win Nandos vouchers as well learning group prizes for the best attendance. Finally, there are prize draws for the students attaining 100% for the whole year.
